A profound and unflinching work of investigative journalism that presents the testimony of displaced Palestinians who are living through genocide, from the acclaimed author of Palestine 'In Requiem for Gaza, testimony meets truth's arrow' YANIS VAROUFAKIS A profound and unflinching work of investigative journalism that presents the testimony of displaced Palestinians who are living through genocide, from the acclaimed author of Palestine In the spring of 2025, the comics journalist Joe Sacco and reporter Chris Hedges travelled to Cairo where they interviewed 29 Palestinian families who had recently left Gaza. In Requiem for Gaza, their experiences and stories detail the crucible of the genocide, its horror, displacement and obliteration. This book is their effort to combat erasure and defy an indifferent world, to pay homage to the villages, refugee camps and cities that have been destroyed, to preserve stories of resilience, courage and self-sacrifice in the face of the appalling death toll, hunger and deprivation, to mourn the extermination of families and loved ones. Combining Sacco's masterful comics-journalism and prose by Hedges, Requiem for Gaza is an urgent, unmissable work of true clarity that preserves a vanished place and asks us not to look away from its people in their struggle for liberation. Praise for Palestine by Joe Sacco 'With the exception of one or two novelists and poets, no one has ever rendered this terrible state of affairs better than Joe Sacco' Edward Said 'Groundbreaking... a masterpiece of the form' Guardian 'Utterly compelling, and as affecting as the work of any war photographer or poet' Varsity 'Palestine gave us something radically new' TIME Magazine

Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco travelled to Cairo to record the stories of Palestinians who had managed to leave Gaza. One of them says: 'We are not heroes. We are human beings.' The people of Gaza tend to be seen as terrorists, statistics, online viewing, or symbols of heroic endurance. Hedges' narrative and Sacco's cartoons, while evoking and mourning a unique culture now destroyed, bring the reader as close as possible, in harrowingly graphic detail, to the reality of human struggle under displacement and genocide -- Norman Finkelstein and Deborah Maccoby
Requiem for Gaza does not simply tell us stories about the genocide. It plunges us into a three-dimensional world of words and graphic images. We enter into the heart of the genocide itself. We are there, alongside the people facing danger and fleeing from it. We feel what the people in Gaza feel. We hold our breath when they approach death and struggle to avoid it.
Requiem for Gaza depicts the tragedy of the Palestinians as it happens. Art becomes life. Words and images light the way to truth -- Atef Abu Saif
