In the U.S., the mid-century modern movement in interiors, product and graphic design and architecture was a reflection of the International and Bauhaus movements including the works of Gropius, Florence Knoll, Le Corbusier and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Brazilian and Scandinavian architects were very influential, with a style characterised by clean simplicity and integration with nature. In Europe, the influence of Le Corbusier and the CIAM resulted in an architectural orthodoxy manifest across most parts of post-war Europe that was ultimately challenged by the radical agendas of the architectural wings of the avant-garde. A critical but sympathetic reappraisal of the internationalist oeuvre, inspired by the Scandinavian Moderns and the late work of Le Corbusier himself, was reinterpreted by groups such as Team X, including structuralist architects and the movement known as New Brutalism. This chic, over-sized coffee table book is a essential object for all mid-century design aficionados, interior designers with a passion for the modernist 1950s and for refined readers seeking inspiration for their own interior. In 20 reports, interior designers and passionate collectors of mid-century furniture, lighting, objects and artworks show how carefully selected touches of high-end mid-century modernism can contribute to a unique living environment. 220 colour illustrations
Details

ISBN13: 9782875501042
Format: Hardback
Number of Pages: 224
Edition:
Publication Date:
Publisher: Beta-Plus
Publication City, Country: Enghien-Edingen, Belgium
Dimensions (cm): 34(H)x27(L)2596
Weight (gm): 2596

Author Biography

Reviews

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0502/9530/8441/files/9782875501042_b372387f-a26b-41e4-a0c7-1c48e0d70402.jpg?v=1746711850
donald-judd-spaces-judd-foundation-new-york-texas-9780578337142
Donald Judd Spaces: Judd Foundation New York & Texas

New cover reissue of this magical story from award-winning international bestselling picture book creator of Lost and Found, Oliver Jeffers.
The landmark survey of Judd's iconic spaces, featuring new drawing details, archival materials and more This second expanded edition presents an unprecedented visual survey of the living and working spaces of the artist Donald Judd in New York and Texas. Filled with newly commissioned and archival photographs alongside five essays by the artist, this book provides an opportunity to explore Judd's personal spaces, which are a crucial part of this revered artist's oeuvre. From a 19th-century cast-iron building in Manhattan to an extensive ranch in the mountains of western Texas, this book details the interiors, exteriors and land surrounding the buildings that comprise Judd's extant living and working spaces. Readers will discover how Judd developed the concept of permanent installation at Spring Street in New York City, with artworks, furniture and decorative objects striking a balance between the building's historical qualities and his own architectural innovations. His buildings in Marfa, Texas, demonstrate how Judd reiterated his concept of integrative living on a larger scale, extending to the reaches of the Chinati Mountains at Ayala de Chinati, his 33,000-acre ranch south of the town. Each of the spaces was thoroughly considered by Judd with resolute attention to function and design. From furniture to utilitarian structures that Judd designed himself, these residences reflect Judd's consistent aesthetic. His spaces underscore his deep interest in the preservation of buildings and his deliberate interventions within existing architecture. Donald Judd (1928-94) was born in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. After serving in the United States Army, he attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia; the Art Students League of New York; and Columbia University in New York, where he completed a BS in philosophy in 1953. Judd was a prolific critic for magazines including Arts, Art International and Art News; he continued to write throughout his career, addressing the relationship of art practice to architecture, design, political action and lived experience in letters and published essays. As an artist, he started out as a painter before turning to three-dimensional work. His radical work and thinking helped shape the art of the late 20th century and continues to influence artists, architects and designers.
Details

ISBN13: 9780578337142
Format: Hardback
Number of Pages: 432
Edition:
Publication Date:
Publisher: Judd Foundation
Publication City, Country: United States
Dimensions (cm): 305(H)x229(L)
Weight (gm):

Author Biography

Reviews
These beautiful photographs and explanatory essays by Judd create a context informing even the most ardent minimalism enthusiast. -- Alana Ruiz de la Pena * ArtDesk *
This book is a must-have for fans of Judd's work and anyone interested in the relationship between art and space. -- Ghalib Dhalla * Indulge *
Donald Judd's true medium was space. Emerging in the devastating aftermath of World War II, Brutalist architecture in Japan is characterized by its geometric shapes, functionality, and unconventional use of concrete-which is often left unfinished to showcase the material's inherent textures and imperfections. Japanese Brutalism represented a radical departure from traditional Japanese architecture, drawing inspiration from the global Brutalist movement but incorporating unique elements that reflect Japan's culture and history. A leading expert on Japanese Brutalism, Paul Tulett has traveled throughout the country to photograph extraordinary examples of this aesthetic. In over 200 dynamic and impeccable photographs he captures the elements and paradoxes inherent in the buildings themselves: the rawness of concrete juxtaposed with elegant design; a harmonious integration into urban landscapes; and a global, modernist approach that maintains traditional Japanese elements. Highlighting the work of architects such as Kenzo Tange, Tadao Ando, and Kazuo Shinohara, this unique volume shows how a blend of global influences and Japanese sensibilities has left an indelible mark on the architectural landscape of Japan, making Japanese Brutalism an intensely captivating and enduring style. There were years when their combined travel schedules meant spending over 200 days abroad, mostly alone, often staying every night in a different city at a different hotel. They were nomads who got glimpses of cities through the windows of taxis and hotel rooms. Time with people they met and admired was too short. So they compared notes and kept a list of places that they wanted to visit again and people that they wanted to get to know better. American photographer Julius Shulman’s images of Californian architecture have burned themselves into the retina of the 20th century. A book on modern architecture without Shulman is inconceivable. Some of his architectural photographs, like the iconic shots of Frank Lloyd Wright’s or Pierre Koenig’s remarkable structures, have been published countless times. The brilliance of buildings like those by Charles Eames, as well as those of his close friend, Richard Neutra, was first brought to light by Shulman’s photography. The clarity of his work demanded that architectural photography had to be considered as an independent art form. Each Shulman image unites perception and understanding for the buildings and their place in the landscape. The precise compositions reveal not just the architectural ideas behind a building’s surface, but also the visions and hopes of an entire age. A sense of humanity is always present in his work, even when the human figure is absent from the actual photographs. Today, a great many of the buildings documented by Shulman have disappeared or been crudely converted, but the thirst for his pioneering images is stronger than ever before.
Reviews
Once you hold it in your hands, you immediately want to get a martini and sit by one of the pools. * Literaturen *
If buildings were people, those in Julius Shulman's photographs would be Grace Kelly: classically elegant, intriguingly remote. * ARTnews *
The complete CSH program portrayed in stunning photos, detailed drawings, and clear essays. * Architectural Review *
Elizabeth A. Adolphe Appia (1862–1928) is a prominent figure in the history of modern theater, best known for his writings on the mise-en-scène and stage design for the operas of Richard Wagner. Far less is known about the Swiss scenographer's importance in twentieth-century architecture and aesthetics. The Appian Way is the definitive account of Appia's significance in this field. It is centered on his remarkable drawings that are at once austere and atmospheric: framing a series of scenes capturing stairs, landings, platforms, and terraces, all staged before a distant horizon under a luminous sky, the drawings are generally monochrome, but the subtle hues of the paper imbue each with a distinctive, ambient undertone. Appia himself might be thought about in the same way; he was distant yet also enigmatically present in the ensuing drama of modern architecture and stage design. Comprised of four main chapters and a coda, this engaging and accessible book is structured as a dramatic story that traces the contours of Appia's life-his personal circumstances, convictions, aesthetic preferences, desires, and motivations-all aimed at constructing a comprehensive portrayal of his life and his work, within the horizons of his time. Appia's drawings are reproduced here in full color, accompanied by a vast range of archival material, much of which has never been published. Ramón Esteve Estudio is a multidisciplinary architecture and design studio known for creating spaces that seamlessly blend light, materiality, and structure into harmonious environments. Deeply rooted in the Mediterranean spirit yet open to global influences, the studio approaches each project as a dialogue between the site and the client. For Esteve, architecture is a balance of technical mastery and artistic sensitivity-where function and beauty come together to create meaningful, lasting spaces. Inspired by vernacular traditions and guided by contemporary principles, the studio's work transforms houses into true homes: emotional, sensory, and timeless. This book, featuring 11 signature private residences in the Mediterranean, reflects Ramón Esteve's philosophy on creating a home-a fusion of manifesto and laboratory, where place, light, scale, and materiality converge to craft a unique experience. The Mediterranean remains a strong cultural and emotional anchor, though his approach extends beyond borders. Each project begins with a conversation between the client and the context, with the ultimate goal of creating a genuine home. For Esteve, architecture is both a craft and a discipline-grounded in sensitivity and technical expertise. Every design is tailor-made, transcending mere function to become a stage for life. For Esteve, the ideal home is one that feels instinctively familiar from the very first moment-an emotional, cultural, and existential refuge. Featuring their latest research on legal frameworks, private interests, and community needs shaping urban public spaces.
A study of the fraught, often inequitable public spaces of New York City. There are no perfect public spaces. Public space is constantly changing, shifting, never quite fixed. It is formed by laws, by regulations, by private ownership, and by city management. Public spaces are influenced both by the people who oversee them and by those who use them. And because of these facts, public spaces are never neutral. In Public Spaces, NY, Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample document and analyze Manhattan's parks, streets, community gardens, privately owned public spaces, recreation areas, waterfronts, and cemeteries. Their book seeks to understand their design, construction and management, and provides detailed drawings of both the spaces themselves and speculative illustrations about how the public uses the spaces. By examining how public spaces facilitate or hinder inclusion, and by detailing the conflicts and negotiations they provoke, this book creates a discourse to reimagine the future of public life in the United States' densest city. A sequel to Vacant Spaces, NY, Public Spaces, NY invites an imagination of a more inclusive, equitable vision for the shared urban spaces we all navigate. Since the early 2010s, he has been constructing the Enoura Observatory, and with his singular vision he has brought together ancient and contemporary Japanese traditions in one art and architectural complex. This book provides an account of this stunning multidisciplinary project. The Observatory, part of the artist's Odawara Art Foundation, is sited on a hilly area covered with citrus trees in Odawara, nestled against the outer rim of the Hakone Mountains and overlooking Sagami Bay. Odawara is home to groups of artisans with mastery of sophisticated techniques that have been handed down for centuries. Sugimoto has constructed the Enoura Observatory using these techniques, which are growing increasingly difficult to preserve. He envisions it as a forum for disseminating art and culture both within Japan and to the rest of the world. The stunning photographs in Enoura Observatory: Land of Distant Memories reveal Sugimoto's poetic vision for this total work of art that is the culmination of his art practice. Hiroshi Sugimoto was born in Tokyo in 1948. A photographer since the 1970s, his work deals with history and temporal existence by investigating themes of time, empiricism and metaphysics. Sugimoto has received numerous grants and fellowships, and his work is held in the collections of Tate Gallery, London, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among many others.
